Tivo to Go - Sort of First Review

Well tivo desktop 2.0 has been released and I have downloaded it. My first concerns arose during the install when I needed to retrieve my "media key" from my tivo units. I was disturbed by needing to do this at all, then my concerns grew when I could not find my media key on either of my tivo units.

Why would I need a media key? It hit me when I realized that windows media player 10 was required. These bastards have completely given in to the man. You have to encrypt the MPEG-2 content you transfer from your own tivo to your own computer.

I finally found my media key by going to tivo's website and getting my special key generated for my account. I entered the key and then to my horror I was prompted for a password that I have to enter each time I play a video have transferred to my own machine.

I was seething by now. I had visions of ipodder like usability from this software update.

The next step was worse... I started tivo desktop 2.0 and low and behold, it could not see either of my tivo's as devices to download video from. I ran downstairs and forced a dial in from my tivo. Surely it would just update.

Alas, I was wrong. No update. I hunted around on the tivo website. I had to enter my id numbers to get myself on the list to download the tivo update sometime in the next few weeks.

The next few weeks? The next few weeks? Moronic.

Not only do I have to encrypt the content. I can deal with that. It is mine. I have no intentions to share it with anyone. I have to use a password to play it on my own computer. I also have to wait weeks to even try it.

Which part of this aggravates me most. The password. Encrypting is fine. The download wait is fine. The password annoys me.

I am not able to rate this as of yet, but as you can tell it better be great once I get the tivo update.
