The Matrix On-Line Final Review

Okay, let me start by saying that I really wanted this game to be good. I really did. Heck, I just wanted to be playable. The fact is that I had to force myself to play this game after the first day.

I would rather be at work than play this game. Don't get me wrong, I like my job, but really, when one is fantasizing about working while playing a game you are paying a monthly fee to play, something is wrong.

So what do I not like? For starters, I hate the way it looks. Literally everything looks the same. I know you are thinking, it is the matrix. Things are supposed to be bland. Bland yes, but not exactly the same, and empty. At first glance it looks like there is detail, but there really isn't. It is all the same. If you aren't on a mission there is nothing in building for you to interact with.

Second, Interlock ( The MxO version of melee ) is hideous. Once the fighting starts you cannot move you character. You can control types of attacks but you have no control over your characters movement beyond choosing an ability of the speed of your attack. Sure it looks good, but if you happen to get stuck at a bad angle the camera will go nuts. Fighting literally feels like you have no control of the outcome. That is not entirely true, but it sure feels that way.

Interaction with other players is sparse at best. If you aren't chatting with other people there is not much to do. Interlock is a pain in a group. If you use a simulacrum to help you fight things can go completely nuts.

In the first days it felt like a giant chat room. Now if feels like it is just empty.

I loved the movies. The first on the best, but all 3 had their moments. This is just not good. It is trying to be an MMORPG but they wanted to make sure it wasn't anything like other MMORPGs. Guess what, Everquest and World of Warcraft exist for a reason. People like the game system. Don't be afraid to copy it and plug your content in. It would have been more enjoyable.

If you have never played an MMORPG, and love the Matrix you might find this to your liking. If you have played other MMORPGs you will most likely just complain that it doesn't work the way you expect.

Read the forums at their site if you are still interested. I have to recommend against this game for real gamers, but I won't look down on you if you tell me you love it. To each his own.

Oh, and another thing. You have to call their customer support to cancel your subscription. You might think this has something to do with security, but the fact that they do not delete your characters for 6 months makes me think this is more of a way to make canceling a pain.
